Mok-Bang, a Different Kind of Food Porn

mok-bang

Usually when we hear the phrase “food porn” we think about those friends that have to whip out their phones at every meal and take a pic of their food to post to Instagram. You know who I’m talking about. There’s always at least one in every group. Your delicious looking meal just arrived at the table, and you can’t wait to chow down. But next thing you know your friend is saying “NO, DON’T TOUCH THAT. I NEED A TO TAKE A PICTURE FIRST.” It’s quite annoying to say the least. But there’s a new trend going around in South Korea that gives a different meaning to food porn. The fad is called “mok-bang”, which loosely translates to “eating” and “broadcast”.

So what exactly is mok-bang? It’s a group of people who go on a live-stream and pig out in front of whoever cares to watch. Yeah, that’s right, people are going on these sites to watch individuals eat tons and tons of food in one sitting. There’s no nudity or anything sexual. It’s just plain old eating.

These streams generally last for about 2 hours at a time. And while the people doing the eating can spend up to a few thousand dollars a month on all of the food; they are also making thousands more from all of the streams.

The lovely lady in this particular video is known as The Diva. She’s one of the most popular mok-bang stars going. It’s actually pretty amazing the amount of food she can put away. I mean, she downs almost an entire cake in this particular video, and that’s after she just finished eating a few other plates of food.

After doing a lot of research and digging on this topic, I’ve decided mok-bang probably isn’t something that I would ever watch on a regular basis. However, that being said, it is totally something I would spend an entire afternoon watching YouTube videos of just out of sheer astonishment. Then afterwards probably look back and realize I just spent the previous 6 hours watching Korean people eating large quantities of food and question what the hell I’m doing with my life.
